'I Am Courage Unfettered'

May 10, 2005 @ 15:52

I took a final exam for my honors class, the same intellectually totalitarian class that I've been yapping about for a year. Instead of answering any of the questions directly on the final, I wrote a concise essay outlining my grievances with the class in particular and life in general. The following (minus the links obviously) is the original essay I turned in about two hours ago:

I have a confession to make. The material for this class ranged from utterly irrelevant (the Aeneid for one) to down-right loony (Anthony's schizo-racist tirades for another).
For the last few years, I've been struggling with school quite frankly. But not in the way most people do. Observe: I broke the thermometer known as GPA in a highly competitive "college preparatory" with a 4.10. My first and only SAT garnered a delightful 1450. In other words, I have demonstrated my keen ability to pull people's strings pretty damn well to achieve what needs to be done (known as "high-quality academic performance"). But this is precisely the problem: I have been drowning in an ocean of superficiality only to realize that even the air I gasp for is made of the same substance. When I dared show my true intelligence, the replies were always discouraging: "you seem determined to fail" and "this is the worst thing I've ever read" and "cut the BS" (references available upon request). Overall though, I have failed to not let schooling get in the way of my education.
Despite all of this, I have actually learnt a single useful thing from all this irrelevant and loony literature: all of the writers and those written about dared to question and oppose the status quo, for better or for worse. Facing fear and uncertainty, they confidently and resolutely proclaimed:
I AM COURAGE UNFETTERED

Well there we have it. Crazy, reckless? Probably, but my capacity to write mindless bullshit has expired.

Trivia: I ripped out a small piece of paper from the final exam on which I managed to copy by hand the essay. That's how I could type it up now. Also, the GPA refers to cumulative four-year score. The linked image is only from junior year as it's the only related thing I could find.

Crazy? Reckless? Psssh. Who turned in a term paper three days late? Hmm?

You have made a big mistake, but you will have plenty of time to recover later. On the other hand, you must know that NOBODY is going to be impressed by your 1450 SAT or your GPA in high school. I have been there and done that. I can throw around my ACT of 33 and SAT of 1430 all day long, but in the end, I had to really commit to college to make it worthwhile. I know you will understand this at some point, but I will warn you that it took me about two years of not being in college to do so. If you disagree with something, you need to spend a lot more time formally challenging it, not just using childish rhetoric. The good news is that few people will care about your grades at the beginning of college if you really find yourself later on. Good luck.

andkon on May 11, 2005 @ 08:52 wrote

Josh, you (like every single teacher have had in recent memory) completely missed my very simple points.

My grades are not meant to impress, if you can't see that, then just you don't get it. They are meant to show I'm not just a D student bitching because school is too hard. I'm an A+ student bitching that it's all a bunch of utter bullshit. In fact, even in my English class I have a solid A right now, but that's because everything I do is complete asslicking. Anything I like to do is graded as crap, anything I hate to do is lauded as amazing and is given good grades.

When I've been getting "cut the BS" and "you seem determined to fail" anytime I try to challange something it's time to realize I can't challenge ANYTHING, that's the entire point. There's nothing to commit to, except accepting every professor's word for word.

As for childish rhetoric, follow the links. How can I take anything seriously that has racism and nonsense that would make even Hitler cringe?

tina on May 11, 2005 @ 11:10 wrote

I think what Josh is trying to get across to you is the fact that while you are very intelligent you come off as arrogant and unwilling to do anything you deem beneath you. It is time to put your itelligence to work and realize that life is full of things you may not want to do but you still do them - without sarcasm, arrogance or a big chip on your shoulder. You may be smarter than most but it doesn't mean nothing can be learned from them andkon. It is time to get off your high horse, get the chip off your shoulder and start to grow up a little. From what I have seen on this site you are always going to have trouble in life until you lighten up a bit.
I value your comments. However, if it's intended to show off your idiocy through a completely unrelated topic, I will ban you not only from never posting but also from the entire website. Simply put, I will never go ape because I disagree with you. (Actually, all this depends on my current menstrual mood.)

Tina: "you come off as arrogant and unwilling to do anything you deem beneath you"

If this last COURAGE outburst is taken independently, then yes it is arrogant. Follow the links to the schizo-racist Tony, follow the links to anything etc. It's a sad day when opposing things because they truly are ridiculous is deemed arrogant. My entire problem is how I can't challenge crucial assumptions my professors make. It's kind of like the elementary school joke "Does your mother know you're gay?" So when you're asked that and told you can't challenge the question itself, what do you do? Seriously, what do you do?

Putting "my intelligence to work" means doing exactly what people tell me to do, unthinkinly. It's like the military's doublethink of "the Army helps you become a leader, by following orders day in and day out." It means going through life passively bidding orders that are pointless and sometimes even wrong. So if I have trouble in life, maybe it's worth it as I can go to bed each night without thinking how degenerate and servile I am. And note that my outbursts and challenges weren't for the hell of it. They were legitimate concerns.

Tina: "You may be smarter than most but it doesn't mean nothing can be learned from them"

I have never said this. In fact, the very basis of the my COURAGE essay is *exactly the opposite*: "Despite all of this, I have actually learnt a single useful thing..."

Tina: "From what I have seen on this site you are always going to have trouble in life until you lighten up a bit. "

Do you see the opposite pairings at the top of the site, with Hitler/Stalin, idiot/Socrates, etc? You made the extreme wagon as many other people say I'm *too* lightened up.

Daknor on May 11, 2005 @ 23:46 wrote

I agree with the others you come off as a lazy bragging bastard, who cries everytime they don't get their way. Instead of complaining you should put effort into schooling and not whine if you have a hard time with class. You remind me of a friend I had who blamed everyone else for his failures and was to much of a wuss to take responsibility. Actually I wan't going to post anything but I believe you deserve to be smacked with a stick for being so retarded.

andkon on May 12, 2005 @ 00:41 wrote

And you remind me of assholes who can't stand anyone who tries to do something differently.

I should put some effort into my schooling? You mean the 4.10 GPA? Oh wait, am I a "bragging bastard" now? Man, you got me at every turn.

Maybe *you* should put some effort into Hooked-On-Phonics so you can read an entry that lasts for 200 words. Maybe then you can put together a response that doesn't make you seem like a resentful baboon who is eager to shit out knee-jerk reactions. Thanks for caring.

tina on May 12, 2005 @ 10:03 wrote

Andkon,
You aren't getting it. Consider High School like Vegas - what happens there stays there. Your GPA in HS does not matter anymore to anyone but you it seems. Is it still your GPA? You don't carry it over to college - at least my school didn't. If you are so intelligent, put it to use. Realize that while you do not agree with the professors they still are your professors. They give the grades - call it what you want but that is how it goes dear. As for my lighten up comment - I meant for you to lighten up in your opinion of others you feel are less intelligent then you (from my guess, that would be everyone.) You will end up old and alone bitching about how nobody understands what you are trying to do and sooner because everyone will stop listening or caring sooner or later. Even as I write this I know it is fruitless, but I wanted to state it anyway. You will take no critisism or advice form anyone because you are smarter then us all - Don't worry, I will bow before I leave. See even people without a 4.10 understand sarcasm!

GPA- My GPA demonstrates that an A student feels everything he is being taught is useless bullshit. It lends credibility as I'm not just an F student bitching. Also, which sounds better? "I got an 1450 but the SAT is still worthless" or "I made a 900, the SAT sucks."

Intelligence- this depends on how you define it. If it's having an encyclopedic knowledge, then I'm sure there's many more intelligent people than me. If it means something more than being a computer, then perhaps I'm the least mechanical person I know.

Tina: "You will end up old and alone bitching about how nobody understands what you are trying to do and sooner because everyone will stop listening or caring sooner or later."

The overarching point of this website, including the arcade, is to engage with like-minded people. Judging from the comments, emails, and increased visitors I get, I'm not alone in decrying hypocrisy. And even if you're right, I'm also not sure why I should act completely fake just so people like me. That is the very superficiality I despise.

Tina: "You will take no critisism or advice form anyone because you are smarter then us all"

Absolute rubbish. This entire site is full of admissions like "I can without a doubt say that I was quite wrong in a quite a lot of areas." Once again, you're on the extreme wagon.

Tina: "Don't worry, I will bow before I leave. See even people without a 4.10 understand sarcasm! "

This is so damn frustrating, why don't you understand even a little bit? My good grades aren't meant to put you in your place. When was the last time you found an A student completely admitting that having an A is completely worthless as the standard by which its measured is bullshit? I'm not an elitist bastard whining about recent troubles, I'm an anti-elitist who has had doubts about the purpose of schooling for years.

Work the system, don't fight it. I think of it like this: education/qualifications are a neccessity. No matter how screwed up it is, if you give up, they have beaten you and deprived you of chances for a good job/life. Don't let them win!

Well, this certainly is a balancing act. I'm not trying to fail or anything, but I'm not going to sit by and pretend everything is dandy. It's not like I want to drop out of college, unless this website was making money somehow out of thin air. Damn it.

I'll add the same script to the textarea that I have in Yahoo search up top.

Hello. I applaud your beliefs, and am surprised by your audacity. However, never forget that it is not your attitude which will be
remembered by others, but your success in your actions. Just be wary of where you place the majority of your efforts.

Yeah, Andkon is 100% correct in saying that teaching young minds to utter simple memorizations is completely worthless. Maybe you should all read an essay called "The Seven-Lesson Schoolteacher" it is in the book "Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling" by John Taylor Gatto. He is one of the best teachers in the nation and even he feels schooling has become a trivial waste of time. And Tina, look up the word sarcasm. Nothing you said was witty. Andkon is obviously not lazy, if he were he wouldn't waste the time to come up with imaginitive answers for those audacious questions. Schooling today means nothing. I graduated high school with a 3.89 on a 4.0 GPA scale. I also accumulated 36 semester hours of college credit in two years of high school on top of my full academic load, work, and the 13 extracurriculars I was in. No one should be able to do that. I was once told by a teacher of mine that if I wasn't able to bullshit as well as I do, I would have failed her classes. There is a reason why we have to take the SAT's and the ACT's: to prove how much useless crap we have accumulated over the years. If you people really want to know your intelligence, take an I.Q. test. Not an online quize created to make people feel better about themselves, but a true I.Q. test. If any of you come back and say you have an I.Q. of 120 or any finite number like that, we will all know you are lying because I.Q. tests have several parts and you recieve a result for each one. When you see people's I.Q.'s in a finite term, that is the average score. Now ask yourselves, "did I know that before?" If you didn't, you need to be back in Grade School. Don't come here to pretend you are smart, it pisses of the truly smart people and even the average people like myself.

zdonnell on Sep 07, 2005 @ 20:42 wrote

I know, I don't spell well and there are probably several grammar errors. I'm not good with spelling or grammar. Those would be the low points on my I.Q. test.
